As part of our ongoing Femuary campaign, we spoke to Women Racing World to gain some more insight into the experiences of female racing drivers. The following article has been written by Women Racing World and highlights the growth that the motorsports industry has seen in recent years with regards to overcoming gender imbalance.
Women Racing World: How to Be Part of The Change
It is no secret that women have had a more challenging time entering and participating in the world of motorsport. Over the past few years, however, this has been changing, and women have been given the chance they deserve to prove their skillset can be equal if not exceed that of their male counterparts. More importantly, women are being chosen for their incredible talent as drivers and not solely for promoting gender equality in motorsports.
But let us start at the beginning. Motorsport has historically been a ‘male’ sport, where women were only seen as a mere ‘compliment’ to the show, as an object that ‘decorated’ the grid, filling the sport with prejudice and sexism.
Fortunately, with time, society and motorsport have gained a lot in terms of inclusion. We do not see models on the starting grid before a race, but we see women putting on their helmets and racing suits to get into the car and hit the track. It doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman; it matters if you are fast.
However, despite the W Series’s important road to give visibility to women in motorsport, there is still a long way to go. This is where the ‘Women Racing World’ project was born, under the ‘F1 World’ brand, to give visibility to women in motorsport (drivers, engineers, mechanics, students…), normalising their professions, and contributing to creating a more inclusive future, with no prejudices.
Thanks to collaborations with Sabré Cook, Belén García, Marta García or Maya Weug, who recently made history by becoming the first women to enter the Ferrari young driver programmes. We have different points of view on how their sporting careers have been so far. However, they all have one thing in common: passion. This moves us; this is what makes us want to be better and strive to achieve our dreams, regardless of our gender.
This paves the road to more competitive and exciting racing in the future!
“Feminism is not about making women stronger. Women are already strong. It is all about changing the way the world perceives that strength.”
We would like to thank Women Racing World again for their help and support with our Femuary initiative. Here at Formula Trinity, we admire their commitment to shining a light on the challenges women face in this industry, along with making huge efforts to promote women’s involvement in motorsports.
