AUTONOMOUS IS NOW

Autonomous technology is becoming more and more relevant around the world with the rise of self-driving vehicles. The challenges facing this technology has transitioned to students through the introduction of Autonomous divisions in Formula Student competitions around the world. Formula Student UK 2018 saw the establishment of a new Autonomous category, and in 2019 this expanded to include more teams and to give options.

Formula Trinity Autonomous was initially established in late 2018 so the team can get an early start by beginning the research, financing and experimentation. The project was rejuvenated under a new focus and direction in 2020 by three veteran members Andrew Dai, Jakub Pyszka and Senan Stanley.

Aligned with Formula Trinity’s core principals, Autonomous aim to provide a learning framework where members can gain critical skills in algorithms, machine learning, sensors, management and leadership. The team aim to achieve this by establishing an ‘Autonomous Racing’ culture within the team and University, where members can participate in competitions outside of Formula Student.

The team strive to compete in competitions such as F1Tenth, with the end goal to successfully compete in the FS-AI category at Silverstone.

FS-AI challenges university teams to build and develop the driving systems to run a fully autonomous vehicle.

Teams compete in a trio of static events similar to the main FS competition, Design and Business Plan Presentation but with Cost & Manufacturing replaced by a Real-World Autonomous event where teams must demonstrate their understanding and practical solutions for the integration of autonomous vehicles as a future transport solution. In addition, teams must complete a series of autonomous missions, again mirroring the main FS competition, with Acceleration, Skid Pad, Sprint Track Drive (Endurance) events. These demonstrate teams’ technical knowledge and understanding as well as the effectiveness of their autonomous driving systems.

In keeping with the main objectives of Formula Student as an educational engineering competition, the FS-AI competition provides a fantastic opportunity for the next generation of autonomous systems engineers to gain the skills and experience that are highly desired by those in industry.

F1TENTH is an international community of researchers, engineers, and autonomous systems enthusiasts. It was originally founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 but has since spread to many other institutions worldwide.

Our mission is to foster interest, excitement, and critical thinking about the increasingly ubiquitous field of autonomous systems. We fulfill this mission with four pillars: Build, Learn, Race and Research.

Formula Trinity Autonomous partnership with Women in AI Ireland

We are thrilled to announce our new partnership with Women in AI Ireland!

Women in AI (WAI) is a nonprofit do-tank working towards gender-inclusive AI which will benefit the global society. This community-driven initiative brings empowerment, knowledge and active collaboration to the field of AI via education, research, events, and blogging.

We will work closely with Women in AI towards our shared goal of growing the participation of women in autonomous driving design and in engineering.
